In September 1895 Louisville Kentucky hosted the Grand Army of the Republic, an annual convention of the Union army veterans. Confederate and Union army veterans and their families converged on Louisville for this event, which was designed as a show of unity on the thirtieth anniversary of the end of the Civil War. According to the Filson Historical Society, it is the largest convention ever held in the city of Louisville’s history. The city overflowed with visitors, who spilled over to Southern Indiana. Visitors filled hotels and camped in tents. The G.A.R. Sporting Guide provided visitors inclined to engage the company of professional ladies with a guide to their establishments.
